Amy was working at an early stage startup at that time called Zimride, a carpooling startup designed for universities and colleges. And while you may not know Zimride, you certainly will have heard about what it morphed into: Lyft.</p><p>This is a very special episode of Brick by Brick not only because Amy is one of those &#8220;ideal guests&#8221; that we had in mind when we started the pod, but because it is the very first in person episode we&#8217;ve recorded (shoutout to the <a href="http://chrishutchins.com">All The Hacks Media</a> team for hooking it up!)</p><p>In this episode of Brick by Brick, Amy and I talk about:</p><ul><li><p>Lyft's origin story and Amy's unexpected recruitment and subsequent 10 year journey</p></li><li><p>The hackathon that launched Lyft</p></li><li><p>The ride sharing wars between Lyft and Uber</p></li><li><p>Did competition ever go too far?</p></li><li><p>Building Lyft's unique culture</p></li><li><p>Advice for companies considering remote or hybrid work models</p></li><li><p>Building with "swagger"</p></li><li><p>Working with your spouse</p></li></ul><p>and more! Mike also sits on the board of Ulta Beauty and Herman Miller.</p><p>He&#8217;s seen his fair share of ups and downs, and in addition to being a fantastic operator and investor, is one of the most genuine and kind people you will meet. </p><p>In our conversation we dig into: </p><ul><li><p>Why&nbsp;Mike left Walmart to go to a very early stage company</p></li><li><p>What skills and playbooks Mike&nbsp;developed at Walmart that he was able to apply at Stitch Fix</p></li><li><p>What&nbsp;he saw in Katrina Lake, Stitch Fix's CEO, that convinced him he should join</p></li><li><p>Balancing being a husband, father, and early stage&nbsp;operator</p></li><li><p>The role of humans and AI in delivering customer service</p></li><li><p>How to build and scale culture</p></li><li><p>The difference between building a company and building a venture fir</p></li></ul><p>..and a whole lot more!</p><p>If your actively looking to make the switch to a startup from a BigCo, generally curious about the difference in operating rhythms between a senior role at a large org and rolling up your sleeves at a startup, or wondering how to balance family and startup life, this episode is for you. </p><p><strong>To get more Mike check out the below:</strong></p><ul><li><p><a href="http://footwork.vc">Footwork</a></p></li><li><p>LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelcsmith1/</p></li><li><p>Email: mike@footwork.vc</p></li></ul><p>We hope you enjoy the conversation! From a <a href="https://taps.substack.com/p/why-i-write?utm_source=publication-search">past article</a>:</p><blockquote><p><em>Nothing taunts me quite like the blinking cursor on a blank page. Writing demands I find my voice. Develop my own opinion. Week to week, this proves more challenging than I care to admit. To do it properly, I need to clear my physical and mental space of attention temptations &#8212; chirping tweets, notification vibrations, the deluge of people and tasks requesting my attention. These blocks of alone time, with nothing to occupy me beyond trying to make sense of the world, are both meditative and exhausting. Especially when the output feels as exciting as the ingredients listed on the back of a maple syrup bottle.</em></p></blockquote><p><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/tjwtjw/">Tom White</a> is one of the people I turn to when I want to vent about the challenges of putting keys to a keyboard and forming something that loosely resembles good writing. After stints at Sandhill Markets, On Deck, and Google, Tom now writes, edits, researches, and ghostwrites professionally for a number of startup/F500 executives, VCs, and institutional fund managers. His free weekly newsletter on books, behavior, psychology, and philosophy, called&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whitenoise.email/">White Noise,</a> is a favorite read of mine. Jared has had a pretty incredible career. He started out doing business development for a pretty traditional investment company focused on tax-advantaged real estate investments. Frustrated with the bureaucracy, he took his first start-up role at Slide - the photo-sharing company Max Levchin started in the early days of social media. Over his time at Slide, Jared went from junior BD person to executive team member and ran their core product. When Slide sold to Google in 2010, Jared became a director there while starting to advise the then-nascent Square. After a year at Google, he joined Square full-time as General Manager and eventually led Growth and Business Operations - 5x'ing the payment volume during his tenure. </p><p>I first met Jared post his time at Square when he joined me and the rest of the team at Matrix Partners in 2013. Jared joined us as one of the youngest GPs in the industry at 29 years old. Jared couldn't kick the start-up bug, though, so he went back into operating and joined Scribd as the COO. Over four years at Scribd, he supported the company through fundraising, scaling down and then up headcount, more than doubling revenue, and weathering the COVID storms - eventually leaving a few years ago and taking an unexpected turn to launch a new type of <a href="http://firstcall.co">coaching firm for founders</a>. </p><p>We have a wide-ranging conversation covering topics including:</p><ul><li><p>How Jared transitioned from finance into startups</p></li><li><p>The importance of storytelling and narrative development for founders and leaders</p></li><li><p>&#8220;Making magic of the mundane" - Jared's approach to tackling necessary but boring tasks that are core to growing any company</p></li><li><p>Early "hacks" Jared and the Square team experimented with as they began to scale</p></li><li><p>The importance of communicating the "why" as a founder, not just giving directives</p></li><li><p>Jared's new coaching venture, <a href="http://firstcall.co">First Call</a>, and his unique approach to founder support</p></li></ul><p>I hope you enjoy the conversation! It&#8217;s unglamorous, it&#8217;s blocking and tackling, and as many people often come to realize, it&#8217;s not for the faint of heart.&nbsp;</p><p>I&#8217;ve experienced the distinct pleasure (and pain) of the early days of startup building, having spent seven years as an early employee and executive at two companies, <a href="http://poynt.co">Poynt</a> and <a href="http://legion.co">Legion</a>. I know firsthand how much successful company-building is a team sport, with the founders, early employees, and early investors working together to lay the foundation for the business. Each day, this small group of believers works to justify its existence and navigate through the important early steps of company building: Build the team, build the product, sell the customers, and get revenue.</p><p>In my 15 years of working with startups, I have found the stories of early company heroics and the lessons they convey &#8212; the engineer who fixed bugs right up to the biggest sales demo in the company&#8217;s history, the lobby-squatting at a customer&#8217;s office waiting to &#8216;run into&#8217; the decision maker, the fundraise that closed when the company had 6 weeks of cash left &#8212; to be the most informative and interesting. But in the sea of great startup content, these stories and their heroes, early employees, are often left untold and unsung.</p><p>We want to share more of those stories with you. So together with my <a href="http://garuda.vc">Garuda Ventures</a> co-founder Arpan, I am excited to introduce the <a href="http://youtube.com/@brickxbrickpod">Brick by Brick</a> podcast.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="http://youtube.com/@brickxbrickpod" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!NS-b!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F68ea8939-4029-4884-bf6e-e2073dcb4b48_1080x1080.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!NS-b!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F68ea8939-4029-4884-bf6e-e2073dcb4b48_1080x1080.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!NS-b!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F68ea8939-4029-4884-bf6e-e2073dcb4b48_1080x1080.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!NS-b!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F68ea8939-4029-4884-bf6e-e2073dcb4b48_1080x1080.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!NS-b!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F68ea8939-4029-4884-bf6e-e2073dcb4b48_1080x1080.png" width="314" height="314" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/68ea8939-4029-4884-bf6e-e2073dcb4b48_1080x1080.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1080,&quot;width&quot;:1080,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:314,&quot;bytes&quot;:80105,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:&quot;http://youtube.com/@brickxbrickpod&quot;,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:true,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!NS-b!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F68ea8939-4029-4884-bf6e-e2073dcb4b48_1080x1080.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!NS-b!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F68ea8939-4029-4884-bf6e-e2073dcb4b48_1080x1080.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!NS-b!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F68ea8939-4029-4884-bf6e-e2073dcb4b48_1080x1080.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!NS-b!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F68ea8939-4029-4884-bf6e-e2073dcb4b48_1080x1080.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" fetchpriority="high"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Learn how successful startups were really built directly from the people who built them</figcaption></figure></div><p>Each episode will feature an early employee, founder, or investor sharing the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of building a startup brick by brick.
